Don't miss DNCB's performance of Kaguya-Hime this weekend at the Crow Collection of Asian Art. DGDG (Danielle Georgiou Dance Group) will be presenting original choreography by founder, Danielle Georgiou, during the second act of the ballet. The choreography is heavily influenced by the traditional style of Butoh Dance, an avant garde performance art originating in Japan in the early 1960s. Georgiou, along with DGDG dancers Delaney Como, Nanci Mendoza, and Jana Duplechin, will represent the people of the moon in Kagyua-Hime. DGDG combines dance, theatre, and film to create interactive performance pieces, while playing with abstractions of traditional narratives. Based on the idea that collaboration generates creativity, DGDG is an entirely collective process with all the work being created by both Georgiou and the dancers. A look at DNCB's costume designer for the upcoming ballet, Kaguya-Hime: Working with Art Director, Gregory Ruppe, Kennetha Woods is preparing to give classical ballet a fresh look. "Design for me has always been a captivating pursuit; to create ideas from imagination and bestow specific aesthetic and functional qualities provides an enthralling challenge.I acquire a very pragmatic, yet an inventive oversight to design with a staunch belief that nothing is ever impossible. Graduating with a Fashion Body and Garment Post-Baccalaureate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a BFA in Sculpture from Texas Christian University; my personal endeavor has been to continuously explore the possibilities of merging sculpture and fashion as an iconically fashionable art form. As an artist and designer, my ultimate goalis to manufacture a design that is inspiringly unique and novel." -Kennetha Woods KAGUYA-HIME: Kaguya-Hime will be our first full-length ballet as a company. The plot for our ballet comes from a 10th century Japanese folktale entitled, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. This is considered the oldest extant Japanese narrative. This transcendent story follows the life of Kaguya-Hime, the Moon Princess. Sent to Earth as an infant, she is found by the Bamboo Cutter, Taketori no Okina. He raises Kaguya-Hime as his own and when she is grown, introduces her to society. Taken aback by her extraordinary beauty, princes flock to her and try to win her over. Even the Emperor himself attempts to gain her affections but to no avail, as Kaguya-Hime's heart belongs to the moon. KAGUYA-HIME IN THE MAKING: DNCB has the pleaseure of collabortating with artist, Gregory Ruppe and fashion designers, Misako Kushibe and Kennetha Woods on this project. In addition, we have many amazing dancers excited to get into the studio and start rehearsing! There is so much that goes into creating a performance such as this, and so many dedicated professionals who donate their time, energy and talents to making it stage worthy. Despite the kindness of her human parents and the adoration Kaguya-Hime receives, she grows more and more melancholy as she longs to be back with her people on the Moon. This transcendent story of love, sorrow and beauty will come to life with the combined efforts of Dallas artists, dancers and musicians, all working to explore and replicate the elegance and intrigue of Japanese culture and fashion.
