<![CDATA[DGDG artistic director, Danielle Georgiou, talks about herĀ piece that will be performed April 14th with DNCB: ]]>Tue, 08 Jan 2013 20:16:15 GMThttp://www.dallasneo-classicalballet.com/3/post/2013/01/dgdg-artistic-director-danielle-georgiou-talks-about-her-piece-that-will-be-performed-april-14th-with-dncb.html“What This Is Not About” explores the levels of experience that are sought but never achieved. We operate in social structures that nurture false communication and unspoken mediocrity. People think too little and too quickly – hasty and
unfounded in assumptions and practice. During conflict, emphasis is placed on semantics, decorum, and constituents – pruning the limbs of a tree choked for water. “What This Is Not About” concerns itself with the social practices of
distraction and posturing. The result is a tacit gloomscape with moments of erratic self-exploitation, mob thought avoidance, and narcissistic zombie trollops. So, when you find yourself in the same argument you are always in, think what you can do to expose what this is not about.

DGDG works to combine dance, theatre, and the visual arts to create interactive performance pieces, while playing with abstractions of traditional narratives. Based on the idea that collaboration generates creativity, DGDG works through a collective process to produce work--from movement generation, to sound, to costumes, to lighting and filmwork.

Don't miss DNCB's performance of Kaguya-Hime this weekend at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.

DGDG (Danielle Georgiou Dance Group) will be presenting original choreography by founder, Danielle Georgiou, during the second act of
the ballet. The choreography is heavily influenced by the traditional style of Butoh Dance, an avant garde performance art originating in Japan in the early 1960s.

Georgiou, along with DGDG dancers Delaney Como, Nanci Mendoza,
and Jana Duplechin, will represent the people of the moon in Kagyua-Hime.

DGDG combines dance, theatre, and film to create interactive performance pieces, while playing with abstractions of traditional narratives.

Based on the idea that collaboration generates creativity, DGDG is an entirely collective process with all the work being created by both Georgiou and the dancers.

<![CDATA[Fashion Design and DNCB. ]]>Wed, 04 Apr 2012 12:49:36 GMThttp://www.dallasneo-classicalballet.com/3/post/2012/04/post-title-click-and-type-to-edit.htmlA look at DNCB's costume designer for the upcoming ballet, Kaguya-Hime:

Working with Art Director, Gregory Ruppe, Kennetha Woods is preparing to give classical ballet a fresh look.

"Design for me has always been a captivating pursuit; to create ideas from imagination and bestow specific aesthetic and functional qualities provides an enthralling challenge.I acquire a very pragmatic, yet an inventive oversight to
design with a staunch belief that nothing is ever impossible. Graduating with a Fashion Body and Garment Post-Baccalaureate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a BFA in Sculpture from Texas Christian University; my personal endeavor has been to continuously explore the possibilities of merging sculpture and fashion as an iconically fashionable art form. As an artist and designer, my ultimate goalis to manufacture a design that is inspiringly unique and novel."

Kaguya-Hime will be our first full-length ballet as a company. The plot for our ballet comes from a 10th century Japanese folktale entitled, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. This is considered the oldest extant Japanese narrative.

This transcendent story follows the life of Kaguya-Hime, the Moon Princess. Sent to Earth as an infant, she is found by the Bamboo Cutter, Taketori no Okina. He raises Kaguya-Hime as his own and when she is grown, introduces her to society. Taken aback by her extraordinary beauty, princes flock to her and try to win her over. Even the Emperor himself attempts to gain her affections but to no avail, as Kaguya-Hime's heart belongs to the moon.

KAGUYA-HIME IN THE MAKING:

DNCB has the pleaseure of collabortating with artist, Gregory Ruppe and fashion designers, Misako Kushibe and Kennetha Woods on this project. In addition, we have many amazing dancers excited to get into the studio and start rehearsing! There is so much that goes into creating a performance such as this, and so many dedicated professionals who donate their time, energy and talents to making it stage worthy. Our goal is to give back to these artists and dancers and give them what they deserve.

Please consider making a KickStarter donation today to help with cotumes, set design and stipends for our dancers and artists.

Kaguya-Hime is a new full-length ballet based on the 10th century Japanese folktale, the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. The story follows the moon princes, Kaguya-Hime, brought to Earth as an infant and raised by humans. She grows into a beautiful woman, courted by princes and the Emperor himself. Despite the kindness of her human parents and the adoration Kaguya-Hime receives, she grows more and more melancholy as she longs to be back with her people on the Moon.

This transcendent story of love, sorrow and beauty will come to life with the combined efforts of Dallas artists, dancers and musicians, all working to explore and replicate the elegance and intrigue of Japanese culture and fashion.
