KAGUYA-HIME:
Kaguya-Hime will be our first full-length ballet as a company. The plot for our ballet comes from a 10th century Japanese folktale entitled, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. This is considered the oldest extant Japanese narrative.
This transcendent story follows the life of Kaguya-Hime, the Moon Princess. Sent to Earth as an infant, she is found by the Bamboo Cutter, Taketori no Okina. He raises Kaguya-Hime as his own and when she is grown, introduces her to society. Taken aback by her extraordinary beauty, princes flock to her and try to win her over. Even the Emperor himself attempts to gain her affections but to no avail, as Kaguya-Hime's heart belongs to the moon.
KAGUYA-HIME IN THE MAKING:
DNCB has the pleaseure of collabortating with artist, Gregory Ruppe and fashion designers, Misako Kushibe and Kennetha Woods on this project. In addition, we have many amazing dancers excited to get into the studio and start rehearsing! There is so much that goes into creating a performance such as this, and so many dedicated professionals who donate their time, energy and talents to making it stage worthy. Our goal is to give back to these artists and dancers and give them what they deserve.
Please consider making a KickStarter donation today to help with cotumes, set design and stipends for our dancers and artists.
